Carriers speak

Carrier #0912

“The module paid for itself in four months. People now know what I do before I open my mouth. Some days it feels as though the mouth is no longer part of the package.”

Carrier #1177

For twenty years I managed without enhancements and was very proud of it. Pride, it turns out, is the one organ NGTB does not manufacture

We install for two

Carriers #3310 and #3311

A module settles better when someone nearby runs the same configuration. Across six thousand carriers the college found a pattern: those fitted in pairs adapt a third faster and reject the module three times less often.

  • 01

    The second set costs less

20% off the second assembly when both applications are filed within one cycle.

  • 02

    Shared circuit

The modules are tuned to see one another: one memory, one channel, one calendar between you.

  • 03

    Synchronised servicing

Examination and updates on the same day. No taking turns being out of action.

Separation is not grounds for termination of contract. Both parties keep their modules, and the modules continue to see one another.

Three thousand years of one habit

It is generally held that enhancement of the body was invented this century. The records say otherwise: man has always done it, merely under other names, and kept the results in museums, mistaking them for art.

Comparative plate: steppe kit and plate armour

01 / 1860s · ZAPOROZHIAN SICH

The steppe branch

While the West pursued the heavy shell, the steppe took another road. The knight was locked inside his own exoskeleton: expensive, slow, three men to service it and a full day to assemble. An enhancement you cannot remove is no longer an enhancement but a sentence.

Danylo Hrechka, who gathered the ways of the Sich from the last surviving witnesses, described the Cossack kit as the first modular system: horse, sabre, oseledets and pipe. Four detachable units — movement, strike, signal and filter. Each fits in a minute and comes off in a second, and none of them drags the others with it.

The knight carried the whole workshop on his back. The Cossack took only what was working that day. Guess which of them came home more often. D. Hrechka, “The Detachable and the Fixed”, 1869
Professor Anselm Rauch

02 / 1984 · HEIDELBERG

An error in the catalogue

Sorting the holdings of the antique collection, Professor Anselm Rauch noticed something odd: on forty-one torsos out of sixty-three, the breaks at the shoulder joint repeated to within a millimetre. The keepers put it down to age and careless transport.

Rauch objected that time works coarsely and differently every time. Only what someone removes to instruction breaks the same way twice. His colleagues received the conclusion coolly, and no one has yet undertaken to refute it.

Our cards read “arms lost”. They ought to read “arms removed”. A. Rauch, “Notes on the Shoulder Joint”, 1986

03 / 2027 · CHAMBERS OF DUKE MORITZ DE AURELIUS

Chambers of Duke Moritz de Aurelius

The Chambers of Duke Moritz de Aurelius were established in 1774, upon the bones of the great French Empire.

Today our androids see to it that your own bones remain intact and preserved for hundreds of centuries.

In 2027, within these walls, a pact was signed between NEXTGENTECHBAY and the presiding officers of the Coalition of United Planets (formerly NATO) on the free manufacture of and access to cybernetic implants (229.p2), together with the Restriction and Definition of Enhancements Not Intended for Civilian Persons (19022x1).

Frame from the college report, 2029

04 / 2029 · FIRST MASS BATCH

The curve we never had to redraw

The 2029 batch was built in eleven weeks and taken in nine days. A frame of a fitter after his shift crossed the continent before the college had finished approving the campaign.

After that the figures stopped being news and became a timetable. The first thousand carriers in a quarter. The first million in four years. Every million after that arrived twice as fast as the one before, and the curve has not flattened once since.

Since 2029, NGTB enhancements and implants have become an inseparable part of every sphere of life on every friendly planet. Today a module is fitted every eleven seconds.

I did not set a record. I simply stopped getting in my own way. Igor Lomanko, champion of the Earth Olympiad, 2030

Conclusion of the Department of Historical Research

We are not selling you a new habit. We are returning a very old one

How it works

Installation protocol

01 / ASSESSMENT

Taking readings

You describe your present condition and what it is denying you. We tell you which module solves the problem — and which does not.

02 / ASSEMBLY

Fitting to the carrier

There is no such thing as a stock body. The module is tuned to your load, your nervous system and your budget in credits.

03 / INTEGRATION

Handing over control

The module stays under observation for the first 30 days. After that it is yours, and it works while you think about something else.
